Once you understand how to balance shots and get them looking like they belong together, you’ll probably want to explore how you can enhance your shots further, by selectively controlling the light and color within them. Here, we'll explore secondary color correction further, as well as looking at how to control mood, prep for broadcast, smooth skin, use tracking to limit the effects of third-party color tools, and apply LUTs — all for free in Final Cut Pro X.

I made this video as part of a (paid) color correction course for macProVideo.com, but this short excerpt should be useful on its own. It shows how to limit your color corrections using a color mask — ideal if you want to make a blue sky even bluer, or a parrot’s head grey.
If color isn’t enough, this tutorial shows you one way to not only correct skin color, but also blur out that skin area to soften it.
If you ever need to deliver a spot for broadcast, you’ll want to know about this built-in filter that can keep luma and chroma under control.
This video shows how to combine several different secondary color corrections at once, to make a shot really sing. There’s a lot going on and it’s worth a careful look.
This long, comprehensive tutorial uses the (paid) plug-in Color Finale to correct a feature film, but if you want to take the next steps in color correction and really need curves, it’s a good choice. Even if you don't own Color Finale, it's great to see a professional colonist at work.
In this special episode of MacBreak Studio, Sam Mestman shows how to correct just part of a face with Color Finale and SliceX. (This technique will also work with SliceX Free.)

This one’s both a tutorial and a free product. If you’ve not used them before, LUTs are pre-packaged color corrections, and can be used early in the process, to compensate for a camera’s Log profile, or later, to apply a stylised look. LUTx Free offers both, and can apply LUTs you’ve found here on FCPXFree.com. There’s a tutorial alongside the product link that shows how to use the Pre-Exposure control in LUTx, and explains how the product works.
